Sound effects

I downloaded a few sound clips from Audio Micro to use for the spaceship engine, and some comical music that I copied from MS Word that will be used for the background music. The UFO noises had to be deleted due to clashing with the music so I am going to use a track for the game over theme.

I also created two sounds at home one by flicking my fingernail against a steel bowl to represent the noise of an asteroid hitting the spaceship, the other is a clinking that was made by tapping a glass cup with a metal spoon that was to be used for power ups.

Review

The first game I  played on Orisinal that I found to be enjoyable was Winterbells, the objective of which was to gain as many points by having a rabbit jump on bells. Each bell that was hit would propell the rabbit higher into the sky and if you miss, the rabbit would fall back to the ground and the game ends. The game play is controlled by the movement of the mouse and as such is very sensitive to the slightest movement. The quality of the graphics is high, the colours chosen make it easy on the eye and there are enough details to keep the players attention - little things like the rabbits ears moving

The second game called Flow by Jenova Chen uses the same tchniques as Winterland only this time the character is a sea creature. The goal is to eat as many other creatures which would allow the players own to "evolve", some when eaten will take the player to an upper or lower level and others are dangerous by causing your creature to loose all of its segments gained but also takes you backe to an upper level. Although the graphics use basic geometric shapes for the characters and a background consistings of shades of blue (a blurry version of the next layers can be seen in the background), the graphics are quite pleasing to look at and the simplicity of it might even add to the enjoyment of the game.

Wormhole

You are the pilot of an intergalactic ship and have to make your way from your home planet, through an asteroid field to reach a wormhole. Some asteroids are slow moving and can be easily dodged but others are small and fast moving, if you get struck by an asteroid your ship returns to the planet where you have to start over. When you successfully make it to the wormhole it will take you to the next destination.

Part B

I have replaced the idea of the moisturiser with applicator for aerosol version. The previous concept seemed too fiddly for for consumers to use, so I took inspiration from a can of spray on sunscreen that I own. The new product is spray on moisturiser which comes in an aerosol can so that consumers are able to apply a light, non - greasy product that is easily absorbed into the skin, and is made from natural ingredients. The new product will produce less waste and mess, it will also allow for access to the back which can be a difficult spot to reach for many people. The new design retains the vibrant packaging and new exotic scents that had been originally planned.

Assesment Task - Redevelop product and packaging

While researching for this assesment, I had considered redevolping for a few brands including McDonalds and Schweppes soft drinks. Being an employee of McDonalds, I was going to use my knowledge of the company to create more products for their Healthy Choices menu. McDonalds tries to entice customers by offering healthy meals, but their range is limited  to chicken and one fish burger. By taking some of the pre-existing burgers and modifying them to McDonalds could offer not only a wider variety of products but in some cases cheaper one also.

The other idea was to create a promotional event for Schweppes. It was intended to feature limited edition glass bottles featuring an iconic actor from the 20's to 80's for each flavour. Schweppes is a brand that has been around since 1788 so quality and tradition are an important part of the brands imaging. My goal was to use seven iconic actors of the twentieth century and associate each actor with a flavour in the line of soft drinks. This was to create a demand by offering a product that would be seen to be highly desirable and collectable amongst consumers. By using these icons, the goal was to evoke the memories of older consumers who may have watched the actors during their youth, and to entice younger consumers by using images that would be considered trendy, bringing in new customers who may not buy Schweppes soft drinks. However the concept turned out be time consuming, having to create what was basically seven new packages.

I thought it was best to focus my attention on improving one product, so I went for moisturising lotion instead. It's something that I use everyday and knew that improvements could be made to the packaging. To save money I buy the large 400ml bottles, these use pump action tops to deliver the moisturiser. After a while - particularly during warm weather, the moisturiser clogs up the nozzle which can be quite messy. The bottles are also narrow at the bottom, with less surface area the bottles are knocked over easily. I redisigned the package by creating the bottles with a brush instead (like Clag). The consumer can use the brush to apply a dab to their skin, before rubbing it in per usual. The benefits of using a brush - apart from the lack of mess, is that consumers will be able to use it to get access to the remaing lotion which pumps usually leave. The bottle itself also received a  make over by adding a round flat base to allow for the bottle to stand upright without it being knocked over so easily. I also made the bottle more appealing to consumers by using vibrant colours contrasted with black. With many cosmetics products including tissues and feminine hygene products using packaging that features colourful designs, I thought that moisturising lotions should receive the same treatment.

Ineffective Advertising 1

yellowpages1

So here is a really good example of ineffective advertising - actually it's not just inaffective but bad. This page comes from a copy of 2008 White Pages (US), yet it quotes statistics from a 1999 study. This may not seem so bad until you consider the growth of the internet in 9 years. It claims that 66% of consumers referenced the White Pages an average of 3.2 times a week, that's 166 times per year. It's conceivable that there are businesses that use the books that often, but I hardly doubt the average consumer has use for it that often, and it's these people who are likey to be the main customer base for most of the businesses that have a need to advertise in the books.

Effective Advertising 3

A very creative billboard used to advertise a telecommunications company. Not only does its size and bright colouring effectively get the attention of commutters, but they also incorporate part of the advertisement in an entertaining way, by placing a section of it on the sidewalk.

Effective Advertising 1

This ad is very effective in portraying the dangers that smoking has on others. The smoke is shown billowing around the child's head like a plastic bag, in effect choking him. The line 'Smoking isn't just suicide, it's murder' emphasises the risk of smoking around children.

Some of my better attempts at shopping.

These pictures were created for a thread on Gallifrey Base. I thought I'd put together something combining my two loves Star Trek and Doctor Who. I promise I'm slowly getting better at it.
